Gaining Admission into a Cosmetology School

Gaining Admission into a Cosmetology School

Applying for admission into any particular program is often an anxiety-inducing experience. You want desperately to gain acceptance, but you’re worried that what you have to offer isn’t enough. Building confidence is important, but so is following some other advice.

Read the Requirements

If you want to attend the Academy of Hair Design, you need to read the requirements for admission. Imagine that you send in application material that directly goes against the requirements. For example, you may be asked to submit a letter of inquiry in a particular format or as a certain type of attachment. When the first impression a school gets of you is that you can’t follow directions, you may be immediately putting your chance of acceptance at risk.

Assemble a Portfolio

Cosmetology is a visual art, and you may need to demonstrate to the school that you have skills in this area. Assembling a portfolio of hair and makeup that you’ve done is a way to demonstrate these skills. Perhaps you’ve done makeup for relatives and friends thus far; you can still make the presentation formal. Sending a couple of attachments of your mom or friend’s hairstyle isn’t enough. Take the time to assemble them into a professionally developed portfolio.

Proofread Your Material

You might think that your grammar, syntax and diction don’t matter because you aren’t applying to a four-year college or university, but that isn’t the case. While admissions boards at all types of schools don’t generally expect perfection, they do look for professionalism. If you send in material that is filled with misspellings or the incorrect usages of words, then the readers may question your commitment to the program. When you know that writing isn’t your strong point, ask a friend who majored in English in college to take a look at what you have written. Strong communication skills are important in virtually all fields, including cosmetology, and well-written material shows that you have these skills.

Express Your Knowledge

After you submit the application material, you might be asked to come in for an interview. Showing that you have some knowledge of the field already is important. For example, if you are discussing a particular technique or term, use the professional name for it. Don’t shy away from discussing your experience in the field of cosmetology or in a related field. Perhaps you have a background in painting or graphic design that you think would lend to your creativity at the school.

Cosmetology school provides you with an opportunity to express your creativity and to develop beautiful designs. If you’re willing to put in the work and to follow some guidelines, you can find yourself gaining a spot in a school soon.
