How to Choose the Right Sandblast Nozzle

One of the most powerful tools and processes in the construction and renovation industry is sandblasting.  Sandblasting is the process of using super-compressed air mixed with pieces of hardened sand to blast various materials, including steel, copper, brick, and stone.  Sandblasting can be used to cut, repair, and modify any existing material for a range of purposes.  When you are looking to sandblast, you will need a lot of different materials and pieces of equipment to do it effectively.  One of the most important parts of any sandblaster are sandblast nozzles.  When you are looking for new sandblast nozzles, there are many different factors to take into consideration.  


When you are looking for a sandblaster nozzle, the first factor that you need to consider is the diameter of the nozzle.  The nozzle can range in size from less than one quarter of an inch all the way up to a full inch in diameter.  The size of the nozzle that you will need will depend on the type of job that you are doing.  If you are looking to completely cut or destroy a material, then it would be wiser to use a larger nozzle.  If you are looking to simply modify or repair something, then using a smaller nozzle would be better as it would allow you to make a finer cut.  

Nozzle Shape

Another factor to consider when you are looking at different nozzles is the shape of the nozzle.  Nozzles typically come in two different shapes, which are the straight bore and the long venturi.  The straight bore shape comes out in a small tunnel.  This creates an outflow that has more pressure and is more precise.  The long venturi comes out of an opening tunnel, which allows you to receive a larger output at any given moment.  There are also some nozzles today that allow you to switch from one shape to the next. 


When you are looking to choose a nozzle, the third factor to consider is the material that the nozzle is made of.  There are many different types of materials in nozzles, each of which have pros and cons.  Tungsten carbide may be the most common type.  This type of material is the least resistant, but is more affordable and provides lower impact to the user. Those that are looking for a nozzle that has the ability to do harder jobs and will last longer, composite carbide or boron carbide could be ideal. However, while these can last longer, they tend to be heavier and harder on the user to manage which can then result in more user strain and can lead to injuries.
