Self-Care Ideas For Stressed Out Moms

Being a mom is one of the toughest jobs around. Whether you’re a stay at home mom who’s chasing after rowdy little ones all day or spending a day at the office to then come home and take on a thousand tasks, this wonderful but often tiring role definitely has a way of wearing you out. Without proper rest and self-care, it’s all too easy to burn out and begin feeling exhausted and resentful instead of enjoying your family in the way you want to. Use these self-care ideas to refresh your mind, body, and soul.

  1. Set up an epic bubble bath. There are your usual quick dips in the bath to wash the crayon and sweat of the day away, and then there are real, properly relaxing bath time experiences. At least once a week, put Dad on kid-duty for an hour and lock yourself in the bathroom to have some real you-time. Light scented candles, throw in your favourite oils, and buy wine online in advance so you have the perfect glass to sip on while you lie back and soak your stress away.
  2. Reach out to other parents. If you’re a stay at home mom, you may struggle with the loneliness and feelings of isolation that can come with spending all of your time with tiny demanding humans instead of adults who you can have a real conversation with. Do some research and seek out mom groups in your local area or toddler classes where you can go to connect with other mothers who are in a similar stage of life. You may find someone there who you can bond with while your kids play.
  3. Schedule in some early nights. Once you’ve got past the newborn stage when sleep is almost impossible to come by, you may find yourself staying up late after your kid’s bedtime to enjoy some quality alone time with your husband or your Netflix account. This is understandable, but it’s also important to rest and recharge for the following day. Schedule in a few nights a week where you aim to get to bed early so you can have a long night of proper sleep.
  4. Reconnect with your passions. For many mothers, the chaos and overall experience of raising their child replaces whatever hobbies and passions they had before they gave birth. If you’re feeling stressed out and overwhelmed, it may help to reconnect with some of the interests or hobbies you had before your children arrived. This may mean heading to the library to take out some novels if you used to love to spend time immersed in a good book, or starting your own blog if you have a passion for writing and self-expression.
  5. Join a movement-focused class. If you’re not much of a gym bunny, you shouldn’t force yourself to join a high-impact workout class that’s just going to exhaust your body even more. Find a class that offers a form of movement you love, whether it’s yoga, kickboxing, ballet, or anything that makes you happy, and treat yourself to that hour a week where you move your body in a way that feels great. You could improve your health and fitness levels while also taking time out to look after yourself.
